Man charged with murdering toddler son

A man was today remanded into custody charged with murdering his 17-month-old son, British police said.

The man, 37, from Stoke Newington, north London, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Enfield Magistrates after he was charged with murder and cruelty on Friday.

He will reappear before the Old Bailey on October 28.

Detectives interviewing his 28-year-old girlfriend, and mother of the child, were also granted a 12-hour extension to continue questioning her in connection with the youngster’s death.

She remains under arrest but has not been charged with any offence.

The child died at Great Ormond Street Hospital on October 17. An inquest will open and adjourn in due course.
