Search continues for man responsible for shooting rampage

A man went on a shooting rampage in northern France, killing a teenager and injuring three people when he opened fire outside two cafes.

From behind the wheel of his vehicle, the man shot at a group of young people leaving a cafe in Grande-Synthe, near Dunkirk, on Friday.

A 17-year-old boy died of his injuries, local official Daniel Ferey said.

Earlier in the evening, the man had fired shots at the window of a cafe in Dunkirk, Mr Ferey said. When customers fled, the driver opened fire again, injuring three people.

One person remains in hospital.

Police are still searching for the driver, who wore sunglasses and a baseball cap and drove a Nissan 4X4 with covered licence plates.

Mr Ferey, an official in the local prefecture, says it's too early to call the shooting a racist crime, but he confirms the cafes targeted were frequented mostly by immigrants and people of North African origin.
