US soldier shot in Afghanistan

US soldiers were fired on as they returned to their base in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar today.

One soldier was shot in the foot, a US military spokesman said.

Colonel Roger King said the Americans had been visiting the hospital where victims of a US air attack on Monday were undergoing treatment when their vehicles came under fire about 1.5 miles outside the city.

One soldier was shot in the foot and is undergoing treatment at a clinic at the US base at Kandahar airport, he said.

Afghans travelling with the convoy returned fire but King said he did not know if they hit any targets.
