Nepalese soldiers killed dozens of Maoist guerrillas in a foiled attack by the rebels on an army camp, government and military officials said today.

Deputy home minister Devendra Raj Kadel confirmed the fighting, but said he was not yet sure how many rebels or soldiers died in last night’s clashes.

‘‘There are a lot of bodies of the guerrillas scattered around the army camp,’’ Kadel said.

A military official said at least 80 rebels were killed in the attack at Khara village in Rukum district, about 250 miles west of the capital, Katmandu.
