Violence continues in Kashmir
Suspected Islamic militants killed at least two Indian soldiers in a series of attacks today, as Indian and Pakistani forces pounded each other across the Line of Control in troubled Kashmir.
One soldier guarding an army camp was shot dead by suspected guerrillas in Manjakot, 110 miles north of Jammu, said police spokesman Subhash Raina. Two soldiers were wounded in the attack.
Suspected militants also ambushed a paramilitary patrol, killing one officer and wounding two others in Kishtwar, 130 miles northeast of Jammu, the winter capital of the state, Raina said.
The attacks further strained India’s deteriorating relations with Pakistan.
The United States and other countries have expressed concern that a fourth war could break out between the nuclear-armed rivals.
Two of the three wars fought between Indian and Pakistan since 1947 were over mountainous Kashmir, which they both claim.
