30 wedding guests die in crash

A truck carrying wedding guests collided head-on with another truck, killing at least 30 people in the southeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, police said today.

The bride and the bridegroom were among those killed instantly when the trucks collided Saturday night and turned over on the road near the town of Adilabad, 130 miles north of the state capital Hyderabad, a police spokesman said with the customary condition of anonymity.

More than 60 people were admitted to hospital with injuries.

The accident occurred as about 100 wedding guests were returning home after the marriage ceremonies.

Traffic accidents are common on Indian roads, where there are no speed limits and truck and bus drivers tend to drive erratically.

Volunteers from nearby villages helped rescue many of the survivors and take the injured to hospital.

Traffic on the road was disrupted and nearly 100 vehicles were stranded as rescue efforts lasted through the night, police said.
