The Commonwealth has decided to suspend Zimbabwe for one year after concluding that the recent presidential elections, which returned President Robert Mugabe to power, were not free and fair.

The Commonwealth has decided to suspend Zimbabwe for one year after concluding that the recent presidential elections, which returned President Robert Mugabe to power, were not free and fair.

A special three-member committee of Australia, Nigeria and South Africa made the decision today. Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced the suspension at a press conference in London.
