Commons leader Robin Cook has sought to calm fears among Labour backbenchers amid reports that Tony Blair faces a Cabinet revolt if he backs US military action against Iraq.

Mr Cook told MPs the prospect of bombing Baghdad was a ‘‘hypothetical outcome’’ and a decision was not expected for ‘‘many months’’.
