Initial tests on samples taken from two suspect sheep in Britain yesterday have returned negative for foot-and-mouth disease.

The samples were taken after lesions were found in the mouths of the two animals on a farm in Hawnby, near Thirsk in north Yorkshire, during a routine inspection.
