The US government has suggested that al-Qaida suspects being held in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba could be returned to home countries, but only if they are tried for their alleged crimes.

The US government has suggested that al-Qaida suspects being held in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba could be returned to home countries, but only if they are tried for their alleged crimes.

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the move would be acceptable subject to certain conditions, including making them available for further interrogation if the US requests it.
