Gunfire in central Jerusalem, casualties reported

A Palestinian gunman began shooting at passers by in the centre of Jerusalem, causing some casualties, according to reports.

After several minutes he was shot and killed by police, police spokesman Kobi Zariyahu confirmed.

The sporadic gunfire went on for about 10 minutes, according to reports.

People on the busy downtown streets ran in all directions, seeking cover. Some Israeli civilians carrying guns drew their weapons, but did not fire.

Large numbers of police and ambulances quickly descended on the scene.

A Palestinian gunmen was suspected of carrying out the attack and Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack.

There is no immediate word on the number or the severity of the casualties.
