Afghan civil servants paid for first time in six months

Afghanistan’s civil servants were rejoicing today after being paid for the first time in six months.

‘‘I am very, very happy,’’ said Finance Ministry employee Abdel Jami, clutching a thick stack of afghanis, the Afghan currency - his pay for the last four weeks. The pay packet was 140,000 afghanis (almost €33), an average government salary.
