Teenage US mayor swears in councillor mum

An eighteen-year-old was made mayor of a US community, just before he swore in his mother as a borough councillor.

Jeffrey Dunkel has been inaugurated at Mount Carbon in Philadelphia where he will serve for four years.

He says his biggest goal is to hire a neighbouring community's police department to patrol the borough of around 300 residents.

Mr Dunkel added: "Speeding is a major problem here, and there's a lot of vandalism."

He got involved in politics after studying local government at school.

The mayor is paid a stipend of $50 per month, and has no office and no budget.

His mother Kathleen Dunkel was sworn in immediately after Mr Dunkel.
