20 injured in Israeli air raid on Palestinian police compound

Israeli planes have bombed a Palestinian police compound in Gaza City ending a two-day lull in military action.

The ceasefire was meant to give Yasser Arafat a chance to act against those responsible for suicide bombings in Israel.

At least 20 people have been left injured.

The Israeli army said the strike had targeted the "Palestinian security apparatus that supports and aids terrorist operations".

A statement said: "The army will continue its operations in order to defend the safety of Israeli citizens and soldiers."

Yasser Arafat says his forces have arrested 180 militants since suicide bombers blew themselves up in Jerusalem and Haifa on Sunday, killing 25.

Israel accuses him of acting in bad faith, saying that those apprehended are low-level figures, not the real planners of attacks.

At Shifa Hospital, doctors were treating at least 20 people injured in the strike.

They included 18 police and two civilians, a man and his son who had been on their way to a morning prayer service.

Medical workers said the wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

Rescue workers have used dogs to search the wreckage for people who may have been trapped.
