Wounded US soldier flown to German base

One of the US soldiers wounded in Afghanistan has been flown to a military base in Germany.

He was among 20 Special Forces troops hurt when an American bomb landed near the soldiers' position.

Three US soldiers and five allied Afghan fighters were killed in the incident north of Kandahar.

An investigation is continuing into the friendly fire incident and none of the dead and injured have yet been identified.

The soldiers' injuries are said to vary between "moderate to severe".

Ambulances were waiting as the C-141 aircraft, arriving from Oman, touched down at Ramstein in Germany.

Major Scott Vadnais, a spokesman for the US Air Force Europe at Ramstein, says he has no details of how severely the soldier arriving there was injured.

All but three of the wounded were evacuated from the scene, first to a US Marine base south of Kandahar and then out of Afghanistan.

The injuries to the 17 taken outside of Afghanistan "vary from moderate to severe," according to a statement from US Central Command.

The soldier brought to Ramstein is to be taken to the nearby Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre for treatment. Plans to bring more casualties to Germany weren't immediately clear, although another plane is expected to arrive during the afternoon.
