A surprise challenge has been mounted to the Tory leadership in the European Parliament - by an alliance of europhile and eurosceptic Conservative MEPs.

The aim is to topple Tory Euro-leader Edward McMillan-Scott, long seen as a stabilising force in a 35-strong Conservative group deeply split over Europe.
