The Bloemfontein High Court ruled that Pieter Odendaal was guilty of murdering John Mosoko Rampuru.

Authorities said Odendaal had tied one end of a wire around Rampuru's leg, looped the other end to his pickup truck and dragged him through the streets before dumping his body in an open field.

It was unclear whether Rampuru was dead before he was dragged for three miles through the town of Sasolburg 40 miles south of Johannesburg.

Odendaal had pleaded not guilty, saying he could not remember anything that happened that evening after he took a sedative and drank alcohol.
