Afghan opposition leader dismisses need for foreign troops

The political head of the Afghan opposition says his fighters can handle the Taliban on their own and do not need troops sent in from other countries.

Burhanuddin Rabbani, who is recognised by most countries as Afghanistan's legitimate president, made the statement after a meeting with Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.

Turkey plans to send 90 special-forces troops to Afghanistan.

"We do not require any troops from friendly states," Mr Rabbani said. "The only thing we need is financial, logistical and political help."

But Mr Rabbani did not comment directly on Turkey's plans.

President Sezer's spokesman said the Afghan side is "very appreciative." The Turkish troops' main purpose would be to train anti-Taliban troops and to facilitate the transport of humanitarian aid.

Turkey's decision to send troops goes against public opinion at home and sentiment in most Muslim countries. It is the only predominantly Muslim country to offer troops to the US-led anti-terrorism campaign focusing on Afghanistan.
