'Nazi camp commander' dies before extradition
A suspected Nazi war criminal who fled Britain when discovered, is thought to have died.
Konrads Kalejs fled the country after he was discovered living in an old peoples home in the Midlands.
He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and cancer, and is reported to have died in Australia.
The Latvian born 88-year-old, who became a millionaire after property deals in the US, was fighting extradition to the Baltic republic to face genocide charges.
He is said to have commanded a guard unit at a labour camp near Riga where prisoners were shot during the Second World War.
Kalejs last appeared in court on a stretcher on October 23, for his appeal against extradition.
Australian authorities said there was insufficient evidence for them to put him on trial, and Latvia only charged him following international pressure.
