French journalist 'charged with spying'

A French journalist arrested in Afghanistan has reportedly been charged with spying.

According to reports, Michel Peyrard will be put on trial.

Two Pakistani journalists arrested with him have also reportedly been charged.

Mr Peyrard is a reporter for the French weekly Paris Match. He was caught entering Afghanistan disguised as a woman.

A Taliban official inside Afghanistan is quoted as saying Mr Peyrard will be put on trial at a special court and no leniency will be shown.

The French Foreign Ministry says the accusation he is a spy is "absurd".

Paris Match news editor Marion Mertens said: "He is an experienced journalist doing his job."

Mr Peyrard was allegedly found with a satellite telephone, tape recorder and other items deemed "spy equipment" by the Taliban authorities.
