Australia to have armed guards on flights
Armed security agents will travel on random Australian domestic and international flights from Christmas.
The Federal Cabinet approved the measure to counter the threat of terrorism. The guards will be specially-trained police officers.
The cabinet also announced tighter baggage and cockpit security, including stronger doors to protect pilots.
A new law providing a specific offence of terrorism to carry a maximum life sentence will also be created.
Prime Minister John Howard said: "I think the travelling public will be reassured. The last thing this country needs is people to become apprehensive about air travel.
"On the other hand, we do need to take measures to upgrade security."
According to reports, Australian carrier Qantas is reluctant to allow armed agents on its planes but Mr Howard said the airline has no choice.
He said: "I regret that we have to do these things but we all regret the circumstances that have brought it about."
