Landslide kills 19

Heavy rains triggered a landslide that killed 19 people in a northeast China village, an official newspaper and a village official said today.

Four people were still missing following Sunday’s mud-and-rock slide in Shijia village in Liaoning province, said Shi Changyu, the village head, said today.

He said 19 people were killed and eight others injured.

Separately, hopes also were fading for three miners trapped in a flooded gold mine in a neighbouring village, said the China Daily, which also reported the deaths of the 19 people in Shijia.

‘‘The shafts are full of water,’’ the newspaper quoted a government official as saying. ‘‘The chances of the three miners being alive are slim.’’
