Macedonian police have shot and killed five suspected ethnic Albanian rebels during a raid on a house in the country's capital, Skopje.

Interior Minister Ljubo Boskovski said the men were preparing an attack on Skopje and were killed during a pre-emptive strike.

The attack comes after peace talks between Slav and ethnic Albanian representatives stalled over a demand that the National Liberation Army disarm completely.

Mediators from NATO and the EU are meeting with leaders from both sides today in an effort to restart the negotiations before the country descends into civil war.
