Floodwaters affect 700,000 people in India

Flooding has worsened in the eastern Indian state of Bihar.

More than 700,000 people in 15 districts have been affected and £1.47 m worth of crops have been damaged, officials say.

Local newspapers have reported that six people have died.

"The people are suffering because of heavy rains in neighbouring Nepal," said Radha Singh, the state water resources secretary.

Air force helicopters have dropped 20,000 food packets, tents and other relief material in Gopalganj district, says state relief commissioner Girish Shankar.

Soldiers in eight boats have evacuated people from the Gopalganj district, the hometown of Bihar state Chief Minister Rabri Devi.

After surveying the damage, Mr Devi announced a compensation of 50,000 rupees (£745) to each family of those drowned.

The state government will provide 25kg of rice, wheat and gram every week to the affected families, he said.
