Actor Robert Downey jnr today avoided a jail sentence for drug possession after agreeing a deal with prosecutors to undergo treatment for his addiction.

The 36-year-old former star of Ally McBeal was ordered to spend a year in a rehabilitation facility and put on probation for three years after he pleaded ‘‘no contest’’ to possession of cocaine and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
