Russia and China sign friendship pact

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin today signed the first post-Soviet friendship treaty between the two nations, cementing their decade-long partnership.

The treaty, signed in Moscow, marked Russia’s and China’s desire to offset the growing American influence in the world and their joint concern about US missile defence plans.
