Pinochet leaves hospital after dental treatment

General Augusto Pinochet was released from hospital after surgery for a dental infection, the Chilean army said in Santiago.

It said the former dictator’s diabetes was brought under control and his heart and kidney condition ‘‘also evolved in a satisfactory manner’’.

Pinochet, 85, will have to continue treatment at home and live there in conditions similar to those in hospital, the statement said.

Pinochet, who entered Santiago Military Hospital last Sunday, is charged with covering up 18 kidnappings and 57 killings that occurred shortly after he ousted Marxist President Salvador Allende in a 1973 coup.

Pinochet, who ruled Chile until 1990, has denied responsibility and appeals against his indictment on human rights charges are pending next week.
