America's Alf Garnett dies of heart attack

Veteran actor Carroll O’Connor, whose portrayal of irascible American bigot Archie Bunker was based on Britain’s Alf Garnett, has died at the age of 76.

O’Connor died from a heart attack yesterday at Brotman Medical Centre, California, his publicist Frank Tobin said. He collapsed at his home and was rushed to hospital, where he died with his wife of nearly 50 years, Nancy, by his side.
