Earthquake shakes Taiwan

A strong earthquake shook northeastern Taiwan today, cracking and knocking down some walls, but no injuries were immediately reported.

The 6.2-magnitude tremor’s epicenter was under the seabed about 12 miles east of Ilan county, the Central Weather Bureau said.

The quake rattled the capital Taipei, which is 75 miles to the northwest, causing damage to some buildings.

Inside Taipei skyscrapers, objects fell off shelves and ceiling lights swayed as the earth shook for about 20 seconds.
