Woman and child die in Peruvian air force attack

A 35-year-old woman and her infant daughter were killed yesterday when a Peruvian air force jet mistakenly shot down a small plane carrying American missionaries in the Amazon jungle region.

A US Embassy spokesman said the Peruvian pilot thought the plane was transporting contraband drugs.

Five people were aboard when it was shot down en route from the Peruvian border to the city of Iquitos.
