A tabby cat which was discarded by George W Bush when he took up the reins of government has gone missing.

Ernie the cat was barred from moving into the White House with America's first family because of fears he would claw furniture.

The orange and white tabby was left in Los Angeles and given to Brad Freeman, a Bush fundraiser.

But now America's first cat has gone missing.

Mr Freeman said: "It's obviously very sad, but we're still hopeful that we'll find him. I check with three animal shelters daily, and we've got posters up all around the neighbourhood."

On the campaign trail, President Bush often recalled how he and his wife found Ernie as a kitten in a tree.

He says the story showed: "If you just hang in there and never give up, things will get better for you, just like they did for Ernie."

Noelia Rodriguez, press secretary for First Lady Laura Bush, says the first family "know that Ernie has a record of landing in some good homes, so maybe his third life will be just as nice".
