Air force jets have attacked Tamil rebel bases in northern Sri Lanka.

Defence ministry spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said the air force was bombing terrorist targets.

He added that MiG-27 and Kfir jets flew out of the air force bases and headed towards the northern Jaffna Peninsula.
