Soldier gunned down after peace agreement

Rebels in Indonesia's restive Aceh province have shot and killed a soldier despite a new peace agreement being signed earlier this week.

The soldier was killed when guerrilla fighters ambushed a security patrol in the north of the province.

The rebel Free Aceh Movement has been fighting for independence in the oil- and natural gas-rich province in the north of Sumatra since 1975.

The fighting has claimed more than 6,000 lives in the past decade.

The insurgents and Indonesia's government entered into a ceasefire last June. At least 546 people have died since then, however.

On Tuesday, the two sides agreed to extend the truce, which was to expire on January 15, for another month.
