US special forces to be deployed in Syria

US special operations forces are to be deployed to northern Syria to work with local troops in the fight against Islamic State militants, according to senior US officials.

The deployment marks the first time US troops have worked openly on the ground in Syria.

US officials say President Barack Obama ordered the deployment of fewer than 50 commandos to help coalition forces co-ordinate with local troops.
