Instagram celebrates its fifth birthday

The photo-sharing social media site, which started as the dream of two friends, is used by people all over the world to document their lives in pictures.

Over the first five years of its life, it has seen more than 40bn photos shared, with 80m uploads a day, and 3.5bn likes every day.

It attracts some of the most rich and famous, providing a platform for stars such as Justin Bieber and Rihanna to share intimate moments with their fans.

When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West shared their first kiss after their wedding on the site, it became the most liked photo of 2014 on Instagram.

However, in June of this year, Kendall Jenner, Kim’s younger sister, took the title by posting a photograph that has gained more than 3m likes.

David Beckham joined the site this year to celebrate his 40th birthday, while Mario Testino used it to reveal his first official pictures of Princess Charlotte.

Beckham is one of the UK’s top five accounts along with One Direction’s Harry Styles and Niall Horan, Real Madrid and Wales footballer Gareth Bale, and an account belonging to @fakeliampayne.

Beckham was the fastest person on Instagram to reach 1m followers, hitting the number in just one day.
