Teacher sheds 27kg on McDiet

Remember Super Size Me, the 2004 film documentary about the adverse effects of eating fast food?

Teacher sheds 27kg on McDiet

That was American filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s social experiment, attempting to exist entirely on food from the McDonald’s menu for a whole month.

In the process, Spurlock’s weight balloons, his energy level plummets, and he experiences all sorts of side-effects.

Fast-forward to 2015, and a new insight into the fast food industry shows how the opposite can happen.

Science teacher John Cisna, from the American state of Iowa, decided to take part in a class experiment and as a result had to eat all of his meals at McDonald’s for an initial three months.

Within this time, he shed two and a half stone, which therefore persuaded him to extend the challenge for a further 90 days.

By the end, he lost more than 27kg, and claims to have lost a whopping 53cm off his chest, waist, and hips, as well as seeing his cholesterol levels decrease.

Cisna challenged his students to produce a meal plan following guidelines for a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet, using only items from the McDonald’s menu.

On a typical day, he started with a breakfast of two egg white delight sandwiches, a bowl of oatmeal and skim milk, then opted for a salad, fruit parfait and apple slices for lunch.

But for dinner, he went for a value meal — usually with french fries on the side. He also walked 45 minutes a day.

Unlike its response to Spurlock, McDonald’s is delighted with Cisna, even appointing him a roving ambassador for their products.

This appointment means he now travels the country giving motivational talks on his experience while also promoting his book, My McDonald’s Diet.
