‘Fault In Our Stars’ big winner at MTV Movie Awards

Teen love story The Fault In Our Stars was the big winner at the MTV Movie Awards during a show filled with motivational messages.

Shailene Woodley picked up the Trailblazer Award and best female performance at the ceremony, while the movie about two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group won movie of the year and best kiss for a clinch between Woodley and love interest Ansel Elgort.

Collecting her Trailblazer prize at the ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Woodley said: “In thinking about this I realised we can’t fully be ourselves without a community reflecting back to us who we truly are and who we pick up along the trail. For all of you who have been pillars to me and who I have been a pillar for, continue. Let’s trailblaze on!”

Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr took home the prestigious Generation Award, which was presented to him by his co-stars from Avengers: Age Of UItron.

The group, including Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Mark Ruffalo, all dropped to their knees as Hollywood’s highest paid actor said: “When I witnessed the first MTV Movie Awards in 1992, I thought that was my generation’s version of the Oscars. When the first generation award was given in 2005 I thought simply, ‘Where is mine?’ and have waited 10 long years for the recognition I so desire.

“Since the birth of MTV I have grown up, struggled, I’ve succeeded, I’ve failed, partied away too much, squandered, resisted, repented, begged for second chances and clawed my way to the top. I have tried to live honourably and never forget my love of the game or my friends.”

Gesturing to his famous co-stars, he added: “If a man is judged by the company he keeps I must be doing something right because look who I’m rolling with. On behalf of my fellow Avengers I invite you to dream big, work hard, keep your noses clean, be of service and, because you can, define your generation.”

The award for best male performance went to Bradley Cooper for American Sniper, who used his speech to pay tribute to Chris Kyle, the real-life sniper he plays in the film.

Jennifer Lopez collected a golden popcorn statue for ‘best scared as shit’ performance for her role in low-budget thriller The Boy Next Door. Picking up her prize from Channing Tatum and the stars of Magic Mike XXL, she said: “The moral of the story, banking on yourself can be scary but it’s rewarding, so bank on yourself.”
