Quirky World: Blind man bites dope dealer as his guide dog looks on

FRANCE: A blind man has told a French court it was he, not his guide dog, who bit a dope dealer selling him real grass rather than the stuff that gets you stoned.

Quirky World: Blind man bites dope dealer as his guide dog looks on

“I bit him. My dog didn’t do it. Guide dogs are not attack dogs,” Ouest France, which reported the story, quoted the man as saying.

The “lawn seller”, as the newspaper dubbed the dealer, was sentenced to four months in jail for hitting the blind man. He will serve his jail sentence home with an electronic bracelet.

HASHFLAGS

UK: Twitter has attempted to add a bit of colour to the general election campaign —by launching “hashflags” for each party.

The development by the social media site ensures the logo of a party will appear in a tweet if a specific hashtag is used.

It follows the use of the so-called hashflags for teams during major sporting events, including the World Cup.

STOLEN CYCLES

England: More than a quarter of cyclists have had their bikes stolen and one in seven has been a victim of theft in the past two years, according to a survey.

Each stolen bike was worth an estimated £377 (€520) on average, but almost one in 10 cyclists have lost bikes worth over £1,000 to thieves, the survey for insurer Protect Your Bubble found.

MICRONATIONS MEET

USA: The largest gathering of world leaders this side of the UN is convening at a less glamorous edifice: The Anaheim Central Library down the street from Disneyland in California.

The US, Britain, and China will not be represented, but the Republic of Molossia, the Grand Duchy of Westarctica, and the Kingdom of Slabovia will be sending dignitaries to MicroCon 2015.

Organisers say it is the first North American gathering of micronations — itty-bitty countries that pretty much nobody but the people who rule them believe really exist.

HOME MOVE

USA: A log cabin that a family reported stolen off its foundation has been found in rural north east Washington.

Stevens County sheriff Kendle Allen said deputies following a tip found the cabin about 16km from its original location. He said the structure had been placed on stilts and was sitting at the end of a private road east of Springdale.

JOURNEY’S END

USA: A 7.5m-long chunk of fibreglass boat spotted drifting off the central Oregon coast is believed to be debris from the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

Chris Havel, of the Oregon parks and recreation department, said the debris was spotted a few miles offshore. A team of Oregon state agencies is working to retrieve the vessel chunk before it reaches land.

The plan is to tow the boat segment to the port of Newport for temporary storage. Mr Havel said it will be removed from the water, studied, dismantled, and taken to a landfill site. Several live yellowtail jack fish on board will be delivered to the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

LUCKY LIAM

USA: The owner of a 17lb Siamese cat named Liam says he has nearly used up his nine lives after getting shocked on a power pole and falling 25 feet.

Jennifer Kagay told The Grants Pass Daily Courier she and her husband were lying in bed when they heard a “bang” and the power went out.

Her husband, Jeff, went outside and the cat was lying still on the transformer at the top of the pole. They were relieved when Liam started to move, but horrified when he fell 25ft to the ground. On the way down, he snagged a wire with a claw, then landed softly in some bushes.
