Amy Winehouse film wows screening

The trailer for a documentary about the life of singer Amy Winehouse has been screened at a pre-Grammy event in America.

Amy, which is due for release later this year, will look at the 27-year-old’s life in the spotlight before her death from alcohol poisoning four year’s ago.

The trailer featured audio from an interview with the performer in which she spoke about becoming famous. Winehouse swept the board at the 2008 Grammy Awards, picking up five gongs including song and record of the year.

Universal Music UK chief executive and chairman David Joseph said the late singer’s success on that occasion was the reason for his timing of the trailer’s first airing.

“About two years ago we decided to make a movie about her career and her life,” he said.

“It’s a very complicated and tender movie. It tackles lots of things about family and media, fame, addiction, but most importantly, it captures the very heart of what she was about, which is an amazing person and a true musical genius,” he said.

Meanwhile, Irish singer songwriter Hozier won a song of the year nomination for Take Me To Church and U2 also won a nomination for best rock album with Songs of Innocence.

The Grammys will air on RTÉ2 at 7.30pm tonight.
