Quirky World: Mum rescued by fire crews after toddler locks her in cupboard
Emergency services were called after the woman managed to alert her next-door neighbours.
Police asked Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to attend her home in Plymstock, Devon.
“A fire appliance was mobilised from Plymstock fire station and, on arrival, confirmed there was an adult locked in the under stairs cupboard as well as a one-year-old child locked in the property,” a fire spokesman said.
“Crews used small tools and a triple extension ladder to gain access and release the adult from the cupboard.
Fifty-one years ago, Arthur Lampitt of Granite City, Illinois, smashed his 1963 Thunderbird into a truck.
This week during surgery in St Louis, a 7in turn signal lever from that T-Bird was removed from his left arm.
Dr Timothy Lang removed the lever during a 45-minute operation. Lampitt, now aged 75, is recovering.
The St Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the accident broke Lampitt’s hip, drawing attention away from the arm, which healed.
A decade or so ago, his arm set off a metal detector at a courthouse. An X-ray showed a slender object the length of a pencil, but since it caused no pain or hardship, Lampitt was told to let it be.
He was moving concrete blocks a few weeks ago when the arm began to hurt for the first time.
“Everything was fine until it started to get bigger,” Lampitt’s wife, Betty, said. “The arm started bulging.”
Lampitt decided to have surgery. He initially wasn’t sure what was in the arm, wondering if a medical instrument had been left during the emergency room visit in 1963.
Lang said a protective pocket grew around the lever. “We see all kinds of foreign objects like nails or pellets, but usually not this large, usually not a turn signal from a 1963 T-Bird,” Lang said. “Something this large often gets infected.”

It seems that sharing a hotel with 400 Russian models is not every sportsman’s idea of a good time.
German third division football team Duisburg changed the hotel booking for a winter training camp in Turkey next week after learning that the hotel they had reserved is hosting a pageant of Russian models.
Duisburg said the club wants to “prepare calmly” for matches and the original hotel might also have been overbooked. The team will be staying at another hotel in the Mediterranean city of Antalya’s Lara district from January 8 to 16.
