Man dies after car crashes on icy road

A driver died in the UK after his car left an icy road and hit a tree as temperatures dropped to the lowest of the year.

Police said the man, who was driving a Land Rover Defender, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near Horam, East Sussex, at 7am.

Emergency services were hampered by temperatures of -2C and sheet ice. Elsewhere, the mercury plunged to -7.6C at Benson, Oxfordshire, and -6.7C in Pembrey Sands, Wales.
