Quirky World ... Car returned 46 years after being stolen

CAR COMEBACK

Running a routine check at the Port of Long Beach, California Highway Patrol identified the 1967 Jaguar XKE as stolen. The problem: It was already on a cargo ship, headed for Europe. More than two months later, the car is back in southern California.

After a lifetime of owning luxury cars, 82-year-old Schneider said he always remembered the Jag as the “prettiest” he had bought. Decades later, it is far from pristine. His plan is to refurbish it for Sunday drives.

BANANA RAID

USA: Police in Philadelphia say a man used a banana he swiped from a shop counter to simulate a gun while he robbed the place.

Police posted surveillance video of the hold-up reported in the East Parkside neighbourhood. The footage shows a man entering the corner grocery store. He waits in line and then takes a banana from the counter by the cash register.

The suspect then sticks the banana in a front pocket of his jumper and points it towards the cashier.

Police say the man demanded money and cigarettes and made off with an undetermined amount of cash.

The video shows him riding off on a bicycle.

HAIR-RAISING CRASH

USA: A car full of teenagers crashed in Idaho after authorities say one of the passengers lit the driver’s armpit hair on fire with a lighter.

All five young people in the Ford Bronco were hurt in the crash and had to receive medical treatment. Authorities say two of the passengers were thrown from the vehicle, but none of the five suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office said the rollover occurred after a 16-year-old was messing around in the front seat and lit 18-year-old Tristian Myers’s armpit hair while Myers was driving. Deputies cited Myers with inattentive driving, while the 16-year-old was cited for interfering with the driver’s safety.

DARK HEART

ENGLAND: A dwarf galaxy 500 times smaller than our own Milky Way has a giant dark heart, scientists have discovered.

M60-UCD1 is the smallest galaxy known to contain a super-massive black hole at its centre, one with a mass equivalent to 21m suns. The finding suggests that huge black holes may be more common than was previously thought.

A black hole is a region where matter has become so densely squeezed that not even light can escape its gravitational pull.

MONKEY BUSINESS

ENGLAND: Chimpanzees aren’t quite the soft cuddly distant cousins of humans that we thought — because they have a key trait in common with us.

We’re both natural-born killers, scientists have shown. And in fact, evidence suggests our closest animal relatives have an almost psychopathic tendency towards violence and slaughter that is not the result of human interference.

A widely-held theory is that chimps only turn on each other when humans disrupt their forest habitats or food supplies. But the research indicates this is wishful thinking. In reality, chimps fight and kill to get what they want and “eliminate rivals”, the authors said.

GIRL GAMERS

ENGLAND: Women have overtaken men as the most prolific gamers in Britain for the first time, according to a new report.

The Internet Advertising Bureau UK said the change has been driven by 25- to 44-year-old women downloading free puzzle and trivia game apps on their mobiles and tablets.

Steve Chester, a director at the bureau, said: “The internet and mobile devices have changed the gaming landscape forever.”
