Supermarket chain Tesco has been forced to rethink a plan to hire a sniper to shoot a protected bird which has been flying around one of its stores.

The firm had applied for a licence from Natural England to allow it to shoot the pied wagtail, which has been regularly spotted in the aisles of a branch in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in recent weeks.

However, locals raised concerns about the plans to bring in a marksman with an air rifle to shoot the bird when the stored closed tomorrow evening.
