QUIRKY WORLD ... Phoenix man saves tiny ground squirrel from drowning in poo

Rick Gruber found the animal shortly after it fell into a backyard pool.

“He just looked like he needed help and I figured he hadn’t been in there for very long,” Gruber explained. “I figured I could try to pull him out and try to see if I could bring him back to life because there was still a chance he hadn’t been in there for maybe a minute.”

Gruber resuscitated the animal by gently squeezing its lungs. The animal moved after a few compressions and then Gruber placed it on a piece of PVC pipe to try to get the water out of his lungs. Throughout the video Gruber rubbed the squirrels back as it regained strength to move again.

Once the animal was breathing normally, Gruber placed it on his knee pad where the critter sat for a while before getting up and moving around.

ISLAND ESCAPE

ENGLAND: Channel 4 bosses say they have received almost 40,000 applications in the space of a day from people who want to take part in a second series of its survival show The Island With Bear Grylls.

The series, in which a group of men go back to nature to cope with the rigours of life as a hunter-gatherer on a desert island, has proved a popular draw with more than 3m viewers. A second run was commissioned last month.

Liam Humphreys, the head of factual entertainment for the channel, said: “The response in less than 24 hours has been incredible. The series has clearly tapped into people’s desire to pare back and start again, freed from the trappings of modern life.”

PERFECT EXCUSE

USA: Practice does not always make perfect — you also need an “integrated” brain to achieve good results, scientists have said.

People with higher levels of brain integration are more alert, interested in learning new things, and focused on the “big picture”. They also think “out of the box”, and are emotionally stable and unselfish, according to experts.

“It’s a simple fact that some people stand out, and we’re trying to tease out why. While there’s a common notion that 10,000 hours of practice is necessary for high achievement, some people put in long hours and do not excel,” said Dr Fred Travis, from the Maharishi University of Management.

ROBO-PITCH

USA: Everybody’s favourite fictional crime-fighting cyborg has made an appearance at a Detroit Tigers game.

RoboCop threw the first pitch at Comerica Park on Tuesday evening as the Tigers hosted the Toronto Blue Jays. An announcement said RoboCop’s motorcycle was on display at the stadium and the first 10,000 fans were getting a RoboCop cheer card after getting inside. The start was part of RoboCop Day in honour of the DVD release of this year’s RoboCop remake.

WET WEDDING

USA: A wedding party took a plunge in Minnesota lake when a dock gave way under their weight.

Dan and Jackie Anderson lined up on a dock with all their groomsmen and bridesmaids for a photo shoot about an hour before the wedding was due to begin. But the weight of the 22 people was too much for the dock and it collapsed beneath them into the lake.

A couple of bridesmaids were able to dash off the dock, but the rest ended up in the water. The bride, groom, and their wedding party were still drying off as guests arrived for the wedding.

FAKE OFFICER

USA: Police say a man impersonating an officer faces charges after signalling a real detective to pull over in Florida.

St Johns County authorities say Matthew Michael Lee McMahon, 20, activated a red and blue light while driving behind an unmarked sheriff’s car. Detective Chance Anderson pulled over and was shocked to see an unknown face behind the wheel.

First Coast News reports that during his more than 10 years of service, the detective has arrested several police impersonators. But none had ever ordered him to stop his car.

McMahon is charged with impersonating an officer and unlawfully displaying blue lights. He was released after posting $5,500 (€4,043) in bail.
