Jason leads tributes after ‘Only Fools and Horses’ star dies

David Jason led tributes following the death of actor Roger Lloyd-Pack, forever known to millions for his role as amiable dimwit Trigger in Only Fools And Horses.

His co-star in the BBC1 sitcom, Jason said the 69-year-old, was not only a fine actor but “a pleasure to work with”.

Lloyd-Pack, whose other memorable portrayals included his regular role as farmer Owen Newitt in The Vicar Of Dibley, died at his home in London.

His agent Maureen Vincent said he had pancreatic cancer and “died at home surrounded by his family”.

Lloyd-Pack clocked up appearances in dozens of TV shows such as The Borgias, and had a recurring role in BBC series 2Point4 Children, as well in as many films and plays.

But he will be best known as road-sweeper Trigger in Only Fools. David Jason, who led the cast as Del Boy, said: “Although he played the simple soul of Trigger in Only Fools And Horses, he was a very intelligent man and a very fine actor capable of many roles. I shall remember him with fondness and for all the good times we had together.”

Graham Linehan, creator of Father Ted, said: “Very sad news about Roger Lloyd-Pack. Trigger was an ancestor to Fr Dougal and I’m glad I once had a chance to tell him so.”

Lloyd-Pack was born into an acting family in north London and his father, Charles, was a regular in Hammer horror films.

The lofty actor, who appeared regularly at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, acknowledged the association could be frustrating.

In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, he said: “People will never stop shouting ‘Trigger!’ at me in the street. The other day I jumped some lights on my bike because someone was hollering at me. A police van pulled me over, and when I stopped, they also shouted ‘Trigger!’. It can be very annoying.”

Best of Trigger

* Trigger: What you up to Dave?

Rodney: I’m listening to Mozart’s Concerto No 5 in D-Minor.

Trigger: No words to this song Dave?

Rodney: No Trigger, it’s an instrumental.

Del Boy: Alright Trigger? What you doing?

Trigger: I’m listening to Mozart’s Concerto No 5 in D-Minor.

Del Boy: Okay.

Trigger: It’s the karaoke version.

*Trigger on his brush:

Del Boy: How long you had that brush now Trigger?

Trigger: Twelve years Del, but it’s had seven new handles and 10 new heads.

*Trigger on his father:

Trigger: You knew my Grandad Arthur, didn’t you Mr Trotter.

Grandad: Yeah, I knew Arthur alright.

Trigger: He was a smashing man, he took care of me when my Mum went.

Rodney: Where was your Dad?

Trigger: He died a couple of years before I was born.

* Trigger: What’s the name of that bloke who invented the Dyson vacuum cleaner?

* Trigger: I’ve always had this sort of image of my perfect woman, sort of my dream girl.

Denzil: What’s she like?

Trigger: Oh she’s nothing to look at, very plain, little scar on her chin where she had a wart removed.
