Lotto winner feared claim call cost

QUIRKY WORLD ... Our daily look at some of the world’s stranger stories

Tracy Tyler, 37, said it was only when partner Adam Young offered to foot the bill for calling Camelot after scooping Saturday’s jackpot that she got in touch with the Lotto organiser.

Frugal Ms Tyler and her long-term partner, from Epping in Essex, have yet to spend a penny of their £5,819,806 fortune.

The couple said they had concerns about paying the bills after 30-year-old Mr Young was made redundant from his warehouse job in May. But they are now planning “a few fancy treats”, including a new Range Rover to replace Mr Young’s battered Citroen and arranging his first trip abroad.

Surgeon ‘operated with DIY drill’

MOLDOVA: A surgeon claims he had to use a handyman’s drill to perform an operation because proper equipment was unavailable.

Grigore Rusanovschi, a doctor at the Valentin Ignatenco Hospital in Chisinau, said he posted a video online showing him using the drill. He accused management of failing to respond to his requests to buy equipment.

Hospital director Nicolae Starciuc said, however, that drills he purchased were not being used.

Health minister Andrei Usatii said investigators had found three proper drills at the hospital, but had not found the drill that Dr Rusanovschi says he used.

Pakistan pulls ‘immoral’ condom commercial off air

PAKISTAN: A condom commercial has been taken off the air following over 1,000 complaints that its broadcast was immoral during the fasting month of Ramadan.

The commercial features a couple wondering how their neighbour managed to land a glamorous wife, only to have the beaming husband reveal his secret — a packet of “Josh” condoms.

“Josh” translates as “excitement” in Urdu.

“People who complained didn’t want such an immoral advertisement on television during the holy month... They wanted us to take action,” said Fakharuddin Mughar, a spokesman for the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.

The advertisement had been voluntarily pulled by the Pakistan Broadcasting Association, he added.

Pakistan is an overwhelmingly Muslim country, where many people scrupulously observe the holy month of fasting and prayer.

It has a long history of banning items considered offensive. YouTube has been banned for nearly a year after complaints that it carried material offensive to Muslims.

Australian uses pair of pliers to steer

AUSTRALIA: His car had two blown tyres and was missing a steering wheel — but an Adelaide man allegedly still managed to drive by using a pair of locking pliers to steer.

The 38-year-old man is now in custody after being charged with a string of offences including driving without a steering wheel and returning a positive drug test to methyl amphetamine and cannabis.

Police said they saw a white Holden sedan with two blown tyres being driven dangerously in suburban Gilles Plains.

When they pulled the car over, they saw it did not have a steering wheel and a pair of locking pliers had been used to steer it.

Minutes earlier, the car was allegedly involved in a crash in which no one was injured.

The man has been charged with driving without due care, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, driving in a dangerous manner and driving while disqualified, unregistered, and uninsured.

He also is accused of breaching bail conditions.

He appeared in court and had been remanded in custody.
