Talk of handover avoided as congress opens

It was an ominous start for the 2,268 Chinese delegates at a pivotal congress to initiate a power handover to new leaders.

They had been given a copy of President Hu Jintao’s speech in advance.

Its title: “Firmly march on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and strive to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects.”
