Arrest warrant for politician

IRAQ’S Shiite-led government has issued an arrest warrant for vice-president Tariq al-Hashemi, the country’s highest ranking Sunni official, on terrorism charges.

The move signalled a sharp new escalation in sectarian tensions that drove Iraq to the brink of civil war a few years ago.

The Interior Ministry revealed the warrant yesterday, the day after the final US troops pulled out of Iraq.
