Newspaper’s sources ‘safe’

SCOTLAND YARD last night dropped its bid to force the Guardian newspaper to reveal confidential sources for stories relating to the phone-hacking scandal.

A hearing had been scheduled for Friday but police said it had consulted the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and opted not to go ahead with the hearing “at this time”.

The CPS said it had asked for more information and more time.

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, who had described the move as “vindictive and disproportionate”, welcomed the decision.
