FEARS there would be a repeat of this month’s rioting at London’s Notting Hill Carnival were unfounded as the first day of the two-day event was largely peaceful.

There were 33 arrests, according to the Met Police, mainly for drug and public order offences, theft and criminal damage.

The Caribbean-flavoured event attracts up to a million revellers.
